Red Diesel, also known as gas oil, is a type of fuel commonly used in off-road vehicles, machinery, and equipment in various industries such as agriculture, construction, and marine. It is called "red" diesel because a red dye is added to it for identification purposes.
Red diesel is similar to regular diesel fuel (also known as white diesel), but it is taxed at a lower rate because it is intended for use in off-road vehicles and equipment that are not driven on public roads. The red dye is added to distinguish it from white diesel, which is subject to higher taxation and is used in vehicles that operate on public roads.
Due to its lower taxation, red diesel is typically less expensive than white diesel. However, it is illegal to use red diesel in vehicles or equipment that is used on public roads. Authorities may conduct checks to ensure that red diesel is not being misused in vehicles that should be running on white diesel.
In some regions, red diesel may also be referred to as industrial diesel, agricultural diesel, or off-road diesel.
